Longevity

"Grow Younger As You Grow Older"

by Dr. Bob Delmonteque

(Author's note: At 84 years of age, Dr. Bob Delmonteque runs marathons, cycles 120 miles, and bench presses over 250 pounds.
He is living proof that a diet of natural, whole foods combined with exercise is the common sense formula for perfect health. I have spent quite a lot of time with Bob and have seen first hand that he practices what he preaches.

Bob is more interested in meditation than medication and believes that anyone—at any age—can be in amazing health.)

Many people reading this article may not believe that they too can get in better shape as they grow older. “That’s possible for other people, but not for me,” is the response I most often hear. The exciting truth is that I’ve personally seen tens of thousands of people dramatically turn their health around—without even going on a diet.

You too could get in better shape as you grow older. In the end, whether or not you grow old amounts to a simple decision, to live the most extraordinary existence possible. When you go to bed, you find yourself with an insistent desire to reach the excitement of tomorrow. Are you content with your current level of health and energy, or do you finally want to be your most vibrant ever?

On one hand you can                      On the other hand you could

be slim

be fat

be healthy

be unhealthy

be free of disease

suffer with disease

live a long happy life

die before your time

enjoy life to the fullest

be miserable

Simple Decision
After making your decision to be in the best possible health, you must have some patience. So often people give up just before a major breakthrough in fitness and nutrition, typical of the way they live their lives in general. The secrets to a healthy body and eternal youth are as simple as good nutrition, exercising regularly, using your mind and nourishing your soul; body, mind, and spirit. You must care for all three.

It only takes 21 consecutive days of consistent action to change a habit, any habit. Isn’t that exciting? In just 21 days you could on the journey to a new life and a new body. Begin walking it ever so slowly; and before you know it, you will be running with the energy you used to believe was only for toddlers and teens.

Along with your positive choices, you've got to have goals and dreams, strength and courage, and a blazing determination and enthusiasm. Not only do goals and dreams keep you focused on your task, they keep you energized and motivated. Most importantly, you have to persist until you succeed. NEVER GIVE UP!

I believe I can do anything I want to do without fear or trepidation. That is the secret to Longevity. Don't worry. Be happy. Longevity depends on spiritual well-being and mental prowess.

A 78 Year Old With A 25 Year Old Body

At the age of 65, I was going downhill, and I began to wonder what I could do about it. I got excited when I began thinking what it would be like to turn back the clock. Finally I made my decision—I would grow younger as I grew older.

To make a long story short, my plan of action worked. In fact it worked so well that many magazines such as Muscle & Fitness and Flex featured my photos and my story. A researcher in Ireland was so amazed by my results that he invited me to a top clinic in Dublin for a series of fitness tests. The doctors were amazed. At age 78, they put my biological age at 25. Who would believe that almost 20 years later I am at my all-time best, and I believe I can be even better. It's all in your mind.  Remember, it all started with a decision—one you can make right now. In order to reach my best possible health I used a program of smart eating, regular exercise, positive mental approach and optimal supplementation.

Don’t Go On A Diet

I didn’t go on any diet. That word leaves a bad taste in my mouth—it smacks of deprivation and punishment. As soon as most people lose weight with a diet, they immediately return to the “forbidden” foods—and their weight goes straight back on.

Instead, I decided to make a lifetime habit of sensible eating. Rather than consuming the refined, processed products on most supermarket shelves, my eating plan contained traditional, natural foods. I eat a lot of fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and wholesome animal products—as close to nature as possible. Eat to nourish your body and not just end your hunger.

About 50% of my food intake usually comes from natural complex carbohydrates in foods such as vegetables—not from simple carbohydrates such as sugars and breads. Good quality proteins—usually from fish, turkey and chicken usually comprise about 30% of my caloric intake. If possible, organic choices are probably better. About 20% of my food will be in the form of good quality fats coming from foods such as avocado or healthy oils such as flaxseed or olive oil. I make sure to chew food my thoroughly and completely. Send messages to the brain and enjoy a good meal like a love affair.

I generally eat between 1800 and 2200 calories per day. Every morning I get on the scale and try to keep my weight around 195. If I weigh more, I cut back on my intake for the day.

Physical Approach

A successful exercise program could contain as little as 3-4 workouts per week or 45 minutes to an hour. Many people will think of every excuse in the book for why he or she can’t exercise: I’m too tired. I don’t have time. I have too many aches and pains. I don’t feel like it. Some worry that their time would be better spent accomplishing something more productive—as if there’s something out there that’s more important than one’s health.

Some people over 60 think their opportunities for exercise have passed. The opposite is the case. At this age you probably have more free time than ever to help ensure good health. It’s never too late. Why suffer with disease while your health could be boosted with simple exercise? A longtime friend of mine Billy Graham used to say, “to lose wealth is to lose much, to lost lose health is to lose all.” It is good practice to have a medical check-up and your physicians OK before embarking on an exercise program. Walking is probably the best exercise. If you can get up out of your rocking chair or couch, you can walk.

If you need to lose weight, set small goals to keep you focused. For example, losing 20 pounds might seem like a difficult task, but if you initially set your sights on losing just 5 pounds, you’ll be surprised how much more achievable it becomes. After you lost the first 5 pounds, keep setting small goals until you reach your target. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but if you keep taking small steps in the right direction, you will certainly reach your desired weight.

Decision Time
Can anybody defy aging and grow younger as they grow older? I’ve no doubt about it. You must decide that your health is a priority and make a pledge with yourself to take the best possible care of it.  My program includes a combination of sensible eating, exercise, positive mental approach, and spiritual practice. Although they work best in combination, any one of these approaches is a step in the right direction.
